Application Post #2
READ THE RULES BEFORE YOU APPLY.

Retired application post #1: here.

Basically, same application post as before, just tied to this screen name so I can keep a better eye on new applications coming in :)

[x] Submit 3-5 of your best artworks
[x] Within the message field, please answer these questions:

Have you ever made tutorials (please provide at least one link if applies)?
If you have a graphics journal, please provide the link:

[x] If submitting large-scaled artworks, please use a thumbnail

Remember, if you can't take rejection and constructive criticism, don't apply. I have no intentions of being biased or rude. I simply will only accept members that I feel will be contributing some good to this community. If you are not accepted, please wait at least 7 days before reapplying. I will also tell you what I think you could do to improve your artwork, because wo/ good artwork, chances are that your tutorials will not be elite. I realize I'm not the most elite artist myself, because there are so many talented people out there. But I can recognize good artwork when I see it. ^^

With all that said, apply at once! I'll try to get back to you as soon as my student life allows me to, but I cannot wait to see your applications. ♥

When you join and apply, you will be approved/rejected by foxestacado.

After you've applied and are accepted, if you have not already joined and are having problems posting, please check your invites. foxestacado will automatically send you an invite if you have not joined. I like the fine color-tuning in your work. Your colors are quite nice, with lots of cool and warm tones within each icon. I don't quite like tutorial #2 because the particular resulting icon was a bit too oversaturated, but I liked your other results, so I think that is fine. I will add you in a bit :)

Hey there :) Sorry, I feel like even though icons #1 and #2 are really great here, that icons #3 and 4 could use some more work. What I love about icon #1 is the great cropping and the fact that you did not lose any of that wonderful sheen on his skin. Icon #2 is another example of great cropping, and the colors are warm and well contrasted. However, icon #3 could be contrasted more. #4 is a great icon, but I feel the base should be prepared a bit more. For example, she could use a bit more contrasting. #5 is a good icon, and is very dramatic but I wish there was something else going on in it.

Now, your tutorials. I like tutorial #1 mostly except I thought the red was a bit too flat. I love the coloring in the background, very muted and subtle, but the red was just a bit too bright and flat. Somehow if you can preserve some dimensionality, it would be great. Tutorial #2 is just too heavy with the grunge. The black and white base needs to preserve more of the details, because right now it's too flat.

Firstly, i don't think you read the rules carefully :) But beside from that, even though I love your bright blues, and love the way you have both cool and warm colors in #2, I think that some of these icons are a bit too sharpened. For example, the eyes in icon #1 and the lips in icon #2 are a wee bit too sharpened. But work on that, and when you do write a tutorial, please apply again :)

I've made 'make this icon' tutorials in the past but they're old and they suck and I don't think I'll do any more like that in the future because they're tedious to make. But right now I'm working on a sharpening tutorial. So, I don't know. I may not make stuff your looking for but I just wanted to try.

(Please reread the rules :)

But besides that, although I love our cropping and text design, I had to go check your journal to see what your coloring style looks like. Right now, in your latest entry, I saw a lot of dull browns. I would like to see more color. For instance, icon #5 here is gorgeous because it supplemented the brown with that sheen of blue, and I think that works really well. Icon #1, 2, and 4 are really great, except the brown kind of dulls the icon and flattens it. Icon #3 has great color, great text design, great cropping.

We want all kinds of tutorials, from "make this icon" tutorial, to general theory tutorials, to really complex tutorials. So I encourage you to apply again if you wish to continue making tutorials :)

I think you need to work more on clarity and effective use of effects. For example, #1. Although I love the tone of colors you achieved there, it would be a lot more effective to contrast the image better. This is the same in #3 and #4. The effects in #3 and #4 really overwhelm the picture. Although #4 makes for an interesting abstract icon, it could really use some more definition. #2 is an interesting icon, with interesting colors, but again, the base needs to be more clear for the overall icon to be effective.

Although I think you have great use of textures at somem points, and the coloring is mostly very nice, you really do need to watch your aspect ratios. In icon #5, the aspect ratio is so very obviously off. However, the coloring for that icon is really beautiful. With icon #1, the texture is a bit overpowering, and the icon loses a lot in terms of clarity.

I wasn't sure from your icons here, so I went to your journal and I was pleased with what I saw. I love your clean/simple icons the most. The coloring is bright and clear, and the compositions are very well done. However, when you do use textures, you tend to get a little too noisy with them, and by that, I mean, that you overuse them sometimes, and that can be too distracting. I will be adding you to our member roster in a bit!

I was really torn about your work because I love about half of them a lot, and the other half, I keep saying to myself, "these would be great IF..." You really do great text icons, and the icons where you use some texture are great too. Really gorgeous work. But I feel your coloring needs some work. I can see why you would like to preserve the browns of some of the icons, but a little bit more contrast would make those same icons really shine.

Gorgeous work! I feel like sometimes the grainy effect in your icons needs to be countered a bit with more contrast, so that the effect does not overwhelm the clarity, but overall, it looks good.

I saw your latest XF batch today, and it was absolutely gorgeous. My only complaint with your tutorial is that it is a wee bit oversharpened. Also, you tend to go a bit too saturated in color, for example, icon #3 and #5 (although #5 also has a very interesting abstraction to it). Just be sure in the future that you are a bit more careful with the sharpening. What I find to be most useful is instead of sharpening the whole icon, just take your sharpen tool, adjust to the strength to 13%, and make a few passes over the areas that really need sharpening, i.e. eyes, hair, etc. That way the icon is sharpened but not overly so.

Sorry, but I was not entirely sure when I viewed your application, so I went to your journal, and found that you could do some work. Overall, your work is good and interesting, but some basic things maybe need some improvement, like overall icon quality. For example, in icons #3 and #5 here, the clarity is sacrificed by giving that "dulled" coloring, which I do not think is particularly successful. Contrast could also be worked on. In some cases, the icon is too busy with effects.

I feel that your cropping is interesting (particularly in icons #1 and #2 here), but that overall, your icons need some work to improve clarity and contrast. I really like the colors in icons #1 and #2 but perhaps too much emphasis is put on the selective coloring and saturation, which washes out the details (particularly in icon #2. Instead, I would like to see more emphasis on preserving details and texture, while also enhancing colors and overall look. Icon #3, and 4 are a bit washed out, and the multiply layer appears to be to blame. Instead, you use the multiply layer but layer on top of it some soft-light layers with your original layer, to "give back" some details and coloring so that the multiply layer is not as overpowering.

Hmm...I was on the fence with your application, actually, but I really like the dramatic darks/lights in your icons here. My favorite of your icons here is #1 and #3. #2 is good too, but I felt the multiply layer is a little bit too dulling for the icon. #4 needs some work in overall clarification and lightening. But the composition is very, very nice.

I'll be adding you in a bit :)

I really actually like your icons here. I thought the coloring for #2, 3, and 4 is very, very beautiful, have a kind of ethereal quality to it. The composition for these three are very nice, as well. However, icons #1 and #4 have a kind of dulled effect that could do with a lot more contrast and enhancing. I looked at your tutorials and thought that those pretty much followed a coloring style that is nice, but in my opinion, would still need a bit more contrast.

Sorry, but please apply again!

Even though I really like icon #1 and #2, I feel #3 is oversharpened, #4 is cute but requires a lot more clarification, and #5 I'm distracted by the border effects. These are cute icons, but I would like to see a bit more work with foundation coloring.

I really, really like large graphic #2, and absolutely ADORE the effect you have there. It's really, really well-done. However, i feel you still need to work a bit on darker images. In large graphic #1, your image is muddy-colored, and could do with a lot more lightening and clarification without sacrificing that dramatic coloring. I really liked icon #2 here because I felt like the contrast is pretty nice. #3 also has fairly good coloring. However, icon #1 needs some work in terms of that multiply layer, which flattens all of the colors you have there.

I love, love, love #4. The colors, the composition, the well-adjusted black/white contrast...it is absolutely a pretty damn perfect icon. However, the other icons posted here do not have the same consistency of quality. Icon #1 is not very well contrasted, and it suffers from the effect. It dulls the icon a bit and flattens it. Icon #2 is very nice except, again, the coloring should be worked on. It is too dark, and not very well contrasted. Icons #3 and 5 look very oversharpened to me. Instead of using the sharpen filter on the whole icon, try using just the sharpen tool, with reduced strength of about 10%, and then sharpen not the base but a blend mode layer, such as a soft light layer. Coloring-wise for those, those two icons also look flattened by the multiply layer you have. My suggestion for multiply layers is that you follow it with a soft-light layer to minimize the dulling effect.

Sorry, your icons need a bit more work when it comes to contrast. Icon #3 and #5 need more contrast. Your use of effects overpower the colors, resulting in dulling the photo. Icon #1 and #2 are also over-saturated. Icon #4 is very flat.

Sorry, I think your icons need a bit more work in terms of contrast. The light, pale colors are very pretty for icons like #1 and #2, but icons #4 and #5 would much benefit from a bit more contrast. For example, a bit more contrast would make icon #5 really stand out. The colors are very pretty...but without that contrast, it tends to look flat.
